2024 I AM ME CHARITY WORK
The founder of Christian Joyce McMillan Social Welfare Foundation, Ms. Joyce McMillan, first came to Taiwan in 1960. She provided patients care and conducted missionary work at the “Christian Mountain Clinic” in Puli. In 1964, during a free clinic in Erlin, more than 200 children with polio came for medical care. Seeing the poor medical and living conditions, as children with polio crawled on the ground and were unable to attend school, Joyce McMillan said, “The poor children are crawling on the cold ground. I prayed to God: Oh, what can I do for them?” Resolute to make a difference, she sold her real estate, left her hometown, and tirelessly raised funds.
Finally, in August 1965, she established the “Joy Polio Children’s Care Home.” After the polio vaccine was introduced, Joy Children’s Care Home shifted its focus. They purchased additional land to expand the facility, and in 1991, enrolled 100 children aged 5 to 15 with severe intellectual disabilities. The facility earned the trust of the government, and in 1997, initiated a second “Wanhe Campus”. The services extended to providing life care, skills training, health care, and other services for adults and the elderly with intellectual and/ or physical disabilities, with a strong emphasis on service quality. The current superintendent, Ms. Lin 林玉嫦, is the successor designated by Ms. McMillan, and is herself a polio survivor.
Face of Beauty International 2024 candidates brought joy to children with disabilities at Changhua Christian Hospital’s Erlin Branch in Taiwan. The event, held as part of the candidates’ tour in Taiwan, saw the beauty queens step beyond their pageant duties to show love, care, and encouragement to the young patients. The candidates engaged in various activities, sharing smiles, laughter, and support through simple but meaningful interactions.
In line with this mission, the FOBI organization also made a generous donation from their “I AM ME” funds, which aim to support charitable causes and create meaningful social impact. The day spent at Changhua Christian Hospital’s Erlin Branch was a testament to the power of kindness, where the Face of Beauty International candidates used their platform to bring light into the lives of others.
